Local movie snags Telly Award
by Kristen Harding
Local filmmaker Deric Olsen is one statuette closer to an
Oscar - literally.
His movie, The Haven, was awarded a bronze Telly Award -
crafted by the same firm that makes the Oscar and Emmy statues
- in the best low-budget category during the 24th Annual Telly
Awards competition in Ashland, Kentucky.
"The success of the movie has been wonderful and achieving
this level of recognition so quickly has been extremely encouraging,"
said Olsen. "I'm looking forward to getting to work on
another project."
The Haven details an operative's mission to prevent the transport
of a bio-chemical weapon into the US. Eerily consistent with
current Canada-US border security issues, the film is a depiction
of how the necessity of force dominates a fictional Black-Ops
Division of CSIS.
The Telly Awards program was founded in 1980 to give recognition
to outstanding Non-Broadcast Film and Video Productions. The
entries - more than 11, 000 this year - are judged on nearly
every element, including concept, writing, talent quality,
set design, lighting, cinematography, editing, sound, music,
and directing.
The bronze statuette is presented to finalists and winners
receive a silver statuette.
