His Own "Agenda" - Filmmaker Deric Olsen's HD Shakedown Coming Soon...

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Alberta – March 30, 2006 – After months in post-production on his latest film THE PHOENIX AGENDA, Deric Olsen, a graduate film student at The University of Regina, is starting to get anxious. And for a filmmaker who's used to controlling the ebb and flow of a shoot, it's not a new sensation, but it's one that's got him, well, excited. You see, the film is almost done.

A native of Mountain View, Alberta and graduate of the New Media program at the University of Lethbridge, Olsen's feature length espionage-thriller will be ready for a Summer 2006 premiere in Regina, SK. The graduate student film is a ground breaking endeavor to utilize a High Definition (HD) digital production workflow normally reserved for big budget movies.

After shooting over 30 hours of (HD) footage in the summer of 2005 on the University of Regina campus, in numerous other Regina locations and in the picturesque foothills and mountains of Southwestern Alberta, Olsen has spent months in the editing suite. He has turned down freelance jobs on numerous productions to stay focused on the task at hand, and is now on the brink of completing a film that many people told him would be impossible to complete.

"During every stage of this production, I really had to step back periodically and look at the big picture and not get bogged down in the details, and that was hard for me with my background in design. I like the details," said Olsen, who founded Alberta-based Northbound Studios. "Before we began shooting, I had been concentrating on scheduling, locations, availabilities and budget - that sort of stuff. But when we were shooting, it was surreal. Aside from a few minor problems, it all came together the way I wanted it to and everyone worked so well together. The cast and crew I had were amazing!"

Now that a final cut of the film is almost done, coming in at approximately 100 minutes, the work isn't over yet. The sound mixing and music composition still need to be completed, but Olsen has already begun planning for the premiere screening, and the eventual DVD release. The project really is the synthesis of Olsen's creative and technical skills, utilizing his expertise in New Media to augment his Graduate Thesis film, "The film is professional and I'm really proud of it and it's really a pay off to be able to give the film a completely professional image from designing the posters to authoring the DVD's," says Olsen. "It's the whole project, from beginning to end, that fascinates me and I think that all this extra work provides a context for the film. It's also a way of rewarding all the hard work that went into the project, to see the film's poster on the marquee or hold the DVD in your hand gives the film a life beyond the 2 hour experience in a darkened theatre, and that's what I promised my cast and crew."

Regina will host the premiere screening this summer and will be the first stop on a Screening Tour that Olsen hopes to organize through independent theatre owners in Saskatchewan, Alberta and B.C. before he submits the film to the festival circuit.
